A photo of a page from all old newspaper advertising Bowerman & Sons, based in 'The Shopping Mart, Cullompton'. The text reads: ' Bowerman & SOns are making a special display of New Goods for Easter', It goes on to detail some of the goods on offer, including 'Ladies' Hats, Ladies' Silk Jumpers, Check Zephyrs, Striped Sponge Cloths and Men's (sic) Suits to Measure'.

The people of Cullompton, as elsewhere in the towns and villages of Mid Devon, were preparing for Easter. We have photos available to view at the Museum which show that people made an effort to look smart on their Easter outings.

The Museum items with connections to Easter come from our three main collections.

Social History catalogues the main items on display in the Museum ranging from these very small eggs which probably contained sweets as an Easter gift, up to the largest item in the Museum, the Tivvy Bumper.

Two egg shaped boxes. One is red or orange, the other is pink and they both have a gold trim at the join which runs vertically through the middle of the egg. They are both painted with simple gold bird outlines.

The Archive contains a huge variety of paper records, again from the tiny individual sheets of invoices, invitations and adverts, up to large volumes. This Easter card was addressed on the back ‘for Dear Mother – with love from Jessie. The inscription is hard to see but says ‘The Happy Light of Easter Gladness shine on thee to-day’.

The front of an Easter Card with a simple sketch of a town with palm trees in front in the middle of a cross, with a star above the scene. Below the drawing an inscription reads 'The Happy Light of Easter shine on thee to-day!'.

From our photo collection, although now 102 years old, the Scouts of 1923 would have been undertaking similar ventures at Easter time. Using modern technology, we are told that it would take 8 hours to walk from Tiverton to Sidmouth. Interestingly the walk is 23 miles and the recommended route for cars, 34 miles!
